Rapper Cam’Ron, with the hip-hop group DIPSET, popularized the term, making it widely known. In New York, “Piff” referred to many haze varieties, standing out in a world of chem, kush, sour, etc. “Pass the Piff” was a common phrase in smoking groups, meaning to share a fire joint or blunt.
The most common “Piff” was Cuban Black Haze, also known as Miami Haze or Black Haze. Growers obtained the seeds for Cuban Black Haze in 1988 and brought them back to Florida. Initially called Purple Haze, it wasn’t actually purple. The “Piff” nickname arose because trying to hold it in would make you “piff pifff pifff” and have to exhale or cough strongly.
